York Dungeons: Unhappy Valentines?

Prior to the announcement of their 2010 enhancements for the attraction, York Dungeon have recently released the following fun press statement:

York Dungeon announces holding hands ban for Valentine’s Day, with thumbscrews at the ready for the worst offenders!

It might be one of the most popular places to take a date in York, but anyone caught holding hands at the city’s scariest attraction this February 14th will be punished by being made to wear thumbscrews.

The city’s scariest attraction has announced a ‘Holding Hands Ban’ for the most romantic day of the year, with thumbscrews at the ready for all those who fail to comply.

York Dungeon Manager Helen Douglas explains: “A lot of young couples come to the Dungeon on first dates, as guys think they can be all macho and protective, plus being scared in the dark together gives couples a great excuse to hold hands. Here at the Dungeon however, we are strictly anti mush! There will be no holding hands this Valentine’s Day – and we have thumbscrews at the ready for any offenders.”

Thumbscrews were a favourite torture instrument used in medieval England to extract confessions. The device works by placing both thumbs into the thumbscrew and slowly crushing the thumbs until the ensuing overwhelming pain would force the victim to talk.

If caught holding hands in the York Dungeon, the offending visitors will be asked to put both of their thumbs into thumbscrews for the rest of their tour, rendering them incapable of holding hands.
