When discussing Scream at Madame Tussauds it is important to put it into context. This is NOT a full scale experience charging over £20 for entry and is NOT a stand alone scare attraction designed to pull people in off the street. What it IS, is an extra element that’s part of a complete day at an existing attraction. As such, the waxworks should be commended for doing something that they didn’t really need to do. The Chamber of Horrors worked perfectly beforehand, and in fact it is a shame that so much of the original exhibition has been ripped out to put Scream in. Anyway, with this in mind we paid the attraction another visit when we were in town recently and surprisingly had more scares in this small “add on” attraction than we did in one of the major London stand alone attractions we visited the same day. For this we were impressed. When the attraction first opened it was called Chamber Live: Serial Killers and many of the scenes represented a cell or secure facility where all the inmates had escaped. Now rebranded as the more generic “Scream” not much has changed set wise except for the removal of the Jack the Ripper street to be replaced by something a bit more industrial looking. Even so, the route around is quite twisted and offers many hiding places for actors to lurk waiting to pounce, and pounce they do! We appreciate that different trips through attractions reward different scares and effects but compared to our previous visits – the actors were really working the space well! By creating some great startle effects it left the whole group wondering what was coming next. Even when our party got split up due to the (still too large) group sizes and the actors picked on the screaming girls in the group behind, they never failed to include us in the fun and as we approached the final door we got stung by an amazing double actor attack that nearly had one of us on the floor! As we burst out through the final door, we actually came out laughing alongside many of the group that was with us. It’s not the longest maze or the most sophisticated in the world but for Tussauds’ target audience of school parties and tourists it provides just the right amount of fright and thrills and is a marked contrast to other exhibits and rooms across the whole Waxworks attraction. In summary, we wouldn’t’ recommend you make a visit to Madame Tussauds just to experience Scream. As a one off attraction it just isn’t big enough to justify the quite high admission rates that Tussauds charge. But if you look on it as something extra to do that’s included as part of a total package then we are sure you’ll have fun! More Information Attraction page 2006 Review |
